Full House
When you attempt to keep a blog, sometimes you feel like your life is so boring you really don’t have anything to blog about. At times, this is true for me. But currently, we have so much going on I can’t even keep up with it in my mind much less take the time to blog about it!
I guess the biggest news is the unique way our family is expanding. Our newest nephew, David, is 6 weeks old already!
I think that’s pretty much the cutest belly button ever! We’ve loved every second we’ve spent with him and look forward to more and more. He’s just precious! Until I get around to posting new pics, you can check him out at PaulJess.com.
So, now we’ve got our own new baby, whom we’ve named Tiki. We’re not sure how old she is, we think between 6 mo-1 year.
Our friends, Brandon & Lori, found her roaming the streets near their home in Bastrop. She was wearing a collar but no tags. They posted flyers and we called the shelter regularly. No one claimed her, so, poor us, we had to adopt her! She’s been a wonderful addition to the family and we LOVE having her here! Bella is glad to have a new friend.
With our brood now expanding, we’ve decided to add a few more. Brandon & Lori, who found Tiki, have just moved in with us for a few months to save money while they prepare for the arrival of their first baby boy (Caden) in August. Brandon is the Associate / Youth Pastor at our church, River Valley Bastrop. They’ll probably be with us for about 8 months to a year. We turned the upstairs music room into sort of a studio apartment for them and it’s working out great so far.
They have a furry son, Cooper, who has happily joined our pack as well. He and Tiki are quickly becoming best buddies.
We just LOVE having everyone around. Nothing like a house full of love. We can’t wait ’til the baby arrives. We have all this extra space until we can start our own family, so we’re thrilled to use it and to get to share this experience with our new friends. We’ll be babysitting David a lot here soon so we’ll be fully equipped on the baby front.
Jess and Paul came and stayed with us last week and brought David and their doggy Chester. Talk about a FULL HOUSE! Somehow, we make it all work and it’s just really fun. Never a dull moment around here any more. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Acuna, Mexico – Go Fish Ministries
I (Michael) went to Acuna, MX with Go Fish Ministries last weekend to help build a church. These are 3 of the local kisd who hung around to help us out. At the end of the weekend I gave them each part of my gear, my gloves, hat and Sunglasses.
Welcome to the world, David Jedidiah Bernstein!
So, some very surprising news … Jess delivered baby David last night at 5:02 pm. He’s almost 4 weeks early!
Jess’ water broke yesterday morning at 6:30am. They made it to the hospital shortly after, and Michael and I arrived around 10:30. Labor contractions started around 1pm. The rest of the family arrived during the afternoon. Pushing began around 3:45 (I think!) David came into the world at 5:02. He’s 6 lbs 15.4 oz and 18″ long! A very big boy for only 36 weeks. Jess did an amazing job, was very strong and we’re really proud of her!
David came out with a slight fever and high white blood cell count. He’s had a little trouble coordinating his eating, breathing and swallowing all at the same time, so they’re keeping him in the NICU for a couple of days to monitor him. The fever is gone and all looks good. His difficulties are expected due to his prematurity, so it’s nothing to worry too much about, but I’m sure they all would appreciate your prayers!
Here’s David with Grandma this morning. Perfection!
A bit misinformed
Overheard at Costco:
(Middle-aged couple in the meat section)
Wife: “Want to try this organic beef?”
Husband: “No thank you, I want my beef to come from cows!”
Dogs Gone Wild: Behind the Scenes
Things are not always as they seem. In our home, what began as an apparent love affair between two dogs turned into something altogether different. And now, sadly, they’ll never be the same.
Bella and Ruby seemed to get along pretty well those first few weeks. The play fighting was hilarious and entertaining. Ruby brightened up having another dog around, and both seemed pretty happy.
Until they didn’t. Enter Bonegate. A humongous, treacherous scandal over one prized possession. We were watching tv and heard an unusual growling coming from the bedroom. When Michael went to investigate, he found Bella backed into a corner, a bone in front of her, and Ruby in front of them both. All of Ruby’s fur was standing straight up and they were staring each other down. Apprehensive of the escalating situation, Michael walked up and grabbed Ruby by the collar. And all hell broke loose. She lunged for Bella’s head and neck, biting and barking. We finally pulled them apart and surveyed the damage. Bella just had a couple of puncture holes in her ears, and a nick by her eye. We kept them separated the rest of the evening.
We’d never experienced dogs fighting in our home, so I started doing some research and learned that female/female aggression can be a big problem, especially if the two are similar in stature, and when dominance is unclear. We had always been careful in reinforcing Ruby’s dominance. We learned what triggers to watch for, and how to properly train and socialize them to prevent further instances from occurring.
Though the fight freaked us out, the two of them acted like nothing had ever happened. Life, love, snuggles, and play continued as usual. The interesting thing is that the play-fighting, though it looks vicious, never escalated beyond play. They had very specific rules. The real fights were always triggered by something, and happened with very little warning.
Two more mild confrontations occurred in the weeks following. We were doing everything we could to maintain order and discipline, but it appeared Bella was beginning to challenge Ruby for dominance, and when challenged, Ruby was not having it. We learned this is common when both dogs are nearing sexual maturity, as these two are.
A final fight occurred, the worst yet. While not visibly injured, they were both pretty riled up by the whole thing. We decided the situation had reached its climax, and we just weren’t willing to put them or ourselves in danger any more. While we had been successful preventing triggers, this last fight happened, believe it or not, over vomit. Ruby threw up her breakfast on the floor, Bella wanted to eat it, and Ruby was not going to allow it. How can we predict or prevent something like that?
We debated whether we had truly done all we could do. We came to the conclusion that this was simply nature taking its course, and we can’t control nature. If they were in the wild, they would either fight it out (with females, this often means to the death) or one would leave and find another pack.
We chose the latter. We knew if we kept them together, someone would be hurt, (us or them) and it could be absolutely tragic.
So, the domestic violence in our home has come to an end. Ruby is off to find a new family, and Bella is staying with us so we can get her heartworms treated. We’re very sad, but feel we ultimately didn’t have a choice.
Our new church home
Michael and I have finally found a new church family. After several uncomfortable visits to a few local churches we were feeling discouraged. Then we visited a church out in Bastrop and really loved the service, the band, and the people.
So once we decided to make this our home, we tried to plug in right away and soon found ourselves volunteering to help with their sermon podcasting, which led to helping with sound, and then of course, we offered to build a new website.
So after a few months of work, here it is! River Valley Christian Fellowship in Bastrop, TX.
They are a fairly new Christian church in Bastrop. We’re still working out the kinks on the site but glad to have it up and running before Easter. We’ve joined a small group here and are really enjoying making some new friends and getting to know people.
The worship band is a group called Burgundy Road. They’re really great! They’ve just released a new EP. You can check them out on iTunes or their website. Their new album is called “When I’m With You.”
Ok, so that’s enough shameless plugging. Back to work!
Happy Birfday Bella!
Well today Bella turns two! Her dad is still out of town, working hard in Mexico, so it’s just us girls here to celebrate.
I wish I could say I’d probably see a lot of this today:
But it’s more likely to be some of this:
And a little of that:
Maybe a smidge of this:
Of course followed by:
What more could a dog ask for? Well actually, if she could talk, this dog would certainly ask for more food. Pretty please, just one or two, or ten more bowls. Can’t you see I’m starving? Don’t you love me? It’s my birfday!
Miguel en Mexico
Michael’s headed down to Mexico today with a group from our church and a local mission team. Please keep him in your prayers! He’ll be back Saturday night. I’m moderately concerned for their safety but believe everything will turn out alright.
Care for a swim?
Michael: “Where’s the camera?”
Sharon: “In the office, why?”
Michael: “There is something cool outside I want to photograph.”
Sharon sees Michael crouch down by the corner of the pool and start shooting.
Sharon: “Ew, it’s not a dead animal, is it?”
Michael: “Nope.”
Turns out, our floating thermometer (aka Howard the Duck) was under siege.
Don’t worry, Howard, we’ll save you! After we take a few more pictures.
This baby copperhead was quite enamoured with Howard, and has yet to let go. They’re getting further aquainted in a bucket outside now as we speak.
Happy Birthday Ayden!
Our beautiful nephew Ayden turns 1 today! Here is a little video tribute! :)

The Web Hounds at Work
It’s not easy keeping watch over the backyard all day. But it’s Bella’s favorite place to be, so Ruby likes to join her.
